Overview

Most safaris put you behind a windscreen. This one doesn't — not entirely. Nyerere National Park, threaded by the mighty Rufiji River, is one of the very few places in Africa where walking safaris and boat safaris are both officially permitted, alongside traditional game drives. Over 4 days you'll track wildlife on foot with an armed ranger, cruise the Rufiji at golden hour as hippos surface and fish eagles hunt overhead, and still get the classic 4x4 game drives that put you face-to-face with lion, elephant, and wild dog. It's the same wilderness, seen three completely different ways.

Day 1
Hotel Pickup in Dar es Salaam → Nyerere National Park
Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel in Dar es Salaam in the morning for the road transfer into Nyerere National Park (approximately 5-6 hours, or ask about the short scheduled flight option to save travel time). Check in to your riverside camp, then head straight out on an afternoon game drive as the light softens and wildlife becomes more active along the Rufiji floodplain.

Overnight: Rufiji River Camp (riverside, family-run) or Siwandu Camp (luxury, lakeside) or Something Similar.
Day 2
Morning Walking Safari → Afternoon Boat Safari
Start the day differently: a guided walking safari with an armed ranger and experienced tracker, moving quietly through the bush on foot. There's no engine noise here — just the sounds of the wilderness, your guide reading tracks and droppings, and the chance to learn about the smaller details a vehicle drives straight past: medicinal plants, insect life, and the signs of predators that passed through hours before you.

In the afternoon, switch pace entirely for a boat safari along the Rufiji River, Tanzania's largest river. Glide past pods of hippo, sunbathing crocodiles, and some of the best birdlife in the country — African fish eagle, malachite kingfisher, and Goliath heron are all regulars here — before returning to camp as the sun sets over the water.

Day 3
Full Day Game Drives — Nyerere's Wildlife
A full day of morning and afternoon game drives through Nyerere's varied terrain — open plains, miombo woodland, lakes, and river channels. This is Tanzania's largest protected wilderness area, holding one of the country's most important populations of African wild dog, alongside strong numbers of lion, elephant, and buffalo, with a fraction of the vehicle traffic you'd find in the Northern Circuit.

Day 4
Sunrise Boat Safari → Depart for Dar es Salaam
One last activity before departure: an early sunrise boat safari, the quietest and coolest time to be on the water, with the best chance of catching hippos and crocodiles still active before the heat of the day sets in. Return to camp for breakfast, then transfer back to Dar es Salaam (or your onward destination).

Yes. Every walking safari is led by a licensed guide alongside an armed park ranger, both trained specifically for walking safaris. Groups stay small, pace is unhurried, and the priority is always distance and caution around wildlife, not close encounters. It's a genuinely safe way to experience the bush on foot when led by trained professionals.
FAQ 2; What will I actually see on the boat safari that I wouldn't see on a game drive?
Hippos and crocodiles are best seen from the water, at a much closer and safer distance than approaching them by vehicle. The Rufiji is also one of Tanzania's best birding locations — you'll likely see species from the boat that rarely show up on a standard game drive checklist.
FAQ 3; How physically demanding is the walking safari?
Not very. Pace is slow and deliberate — this is about observation, not covering distance. Basic fitness for an unhurried 1-2 hour walk on uneven ground is all that's needed; there's no climbing or strenuous exertion involved.
